FEBRUARY 20 2011 : Day 50 : Removed from our lands, we are literally removed from ourselves.

FEBHOL 086

Culture is the land, the land and spirituality of Aboriginal people, our cultural beliefs or reason for existence is the land. You take that away and you take away our reason for existence. We have grown up on the land. We are dancing, singing and painting for the land. We are celebrating the land. Removed from our lands, we are literally removed from ourselves.

MAX BARRY TECHNIQUE NO 5:  The Burst

What: You write in patches of 30-60 minutes. When you feel your concentration flag, you go do something else for 30 minutes, then return.

Bursts will suit me today. It’s a surreal time as we wait for family to come and prepare to travel south to farewell my sister. I start to write and then something comes to mind and I leave my little desk at the side window and take off to a task which is often  forgotten by the time I get to it.

The Summer heat continues and I pack a bag with my mind on clothes as if they were vitally important. I have flowered tops and want a silky pair of black pants but lack the energy to go looking for some.

I am going into the village soon to a meeting in the Raleigh Hall. On our Lands. Estuarine I am. The river flats and the dark coastal rivers. Scrubby told me once that they weren’t REALLY rivers. They are MY rivers. I follow the western bank of the Bellinger, cross the bridge on the old highway and follow the Eastern Bank into the village and to the old hall.

When I come back, the Kids from the Mountain might well have arrived and if they have, then there will be little writing for a few days.
