We are approaching the end of the month. Its grey and clouded and cool here at home. The grass has grown long and the nights are grown darker. The kookaburra is still on the front fence and I’m sitting at my table at the windows once more.

I have taken once more to chewing extra strong peppermints and musk lollies. They will for for stimulants this morning. And I shall do some river thinking. I live on the Northern Rivers of NSW. Most of them are not weary rivers. They are short feisty rivers with the mountains just behind them. The mighty Clarence is the exception to that. 400kms of winding river.

Here in Raleigh, the Bellinger runs along down the bottom of our road, meets up with the Kalang and flows out to sea at Urunga. Urunga – where the rivers meet the sea. We were down the road the other day and along a little at North Beach. The temperatures were high and the sun blitzing us. The Mob had come down the mountain from Armidale for the funeral and they were par boiled from the mid summer drive. So we went to the North Beach River Pool and there we swam.

Going south to Farewell, we crossed the Rivers that have been part of our family lives since the 1800s. We crossed the Bellinger, the Nambucca, the Macleay and reached the Hastings  where my sister’s river finally reached the Sea.
