Its after dinner and I come to the eBENCH quietly in pyjamas. They say the OUR HOUSE song came out in 1970. I didn’t think that I heard it quite that early but likely I did. I was living in Tumbarumba back then in a wee flat with two other school teachers and I was teaching 12 miles from town in a village called Rosewood. I was missing the excitement of the dropping out era in Sydney completely and life seemed to be passing my by. I was 20 years old. The next year, I was in a gruesome brick flat in Queanbeyan and teaching infants children in South Queanbeyan – just out of the excitement of Canberra. I was inclined always to think that I was ‘missing out’ on the good things, not cool enough for the in crowd, that life was missing me by an inch.
Then I heard this song and despite not liking cats very much, I have since carried a vision that when I had 2 cats in the yard, I would be in the right place and singing to myself “ Life used to be so hard. Now everything is easy – cause of you – and our house”.
This afternoon, after a visit from Kati B and the Cheery Redhead, after some singing about frogs going la-de-da-di-da and showing the broken leg to the horses and after an afternoon sleep, I spotted Izzy on the front verandah in the rain with the 2 Cats – and thought to myself – life is quite often easy these days. Quite often.
Let’s take a good look at the song and at our house here in Raleigh.
