17 AUGUST 2011 : ESTAP : ENTRANCE NO 4" The point, as in a musical score, at which a performer begins.

4. The point, as in a musical score, at which a performer begins.

I live with a Bass Player. I have had very little to do with Musicians throughout my life but at the age of 59 I met a Bass Player and we moved in together. That move brought me into the world of the Rock Musician. Very interesting it is. I know just a little more than I once did about when a Performer is to BEGIN. I guess this one applies to theatre and suchwise as well.

I guess that applies to a lot of things in life. Don’t come in too early. Don’t come in too late. I am not writing much today. I shall just look at the Muso pics of the last few years and do some thinking. We each have our own Entrance Points in the Various Theatres of Life.

Izzy Interview

about ENTRANCES in a rock band:

Someone points at you or nods their head.

Drummer puts one hand up a little higher than usual. The other players get to read the body language of the drummer. Sometimes the drummer leans back and that means he’s about to do a drum fill. That can announce an entrance for whoever’s turn it is to come in.

Some members don’t give you a clue and diss you when you get it wrong.

If you know the songs well enough you don’t need someone else to give you the clue, you know it yourself.

if the entrance is not open to you and you try to get in then you have made a mistake . If you’re good enough to fudge things, you can make it look like you meant to come in and usually and if the rest of the band members are as good as you they will cover for you by playing something that complements your fudge.

The other part of the entrance is the actual coming on stage because you have to keep the distance of mystique between the audience and the performer which means in the case of a band not just wandering on member by member scratching you whatevers, It means the whole band come son as a unit preferably behind a closed curtain but that’s not always possible. so that when the first note starts the band is in  character .

Even if in character means casual down to earth not really up on stage at all vibe.

if that’s your vibe then you’d better have it ready ‘bang’, otherwise the audience will see through.

Another part of that, your instruments get tuned up in the dressing room. that’s part of a scrappy entrance otherwise.
