19 AUGUST 2011 : ESTAP : WRAPPING UP THE WEEK: ENTRANCING

RANDOM NET SURFING ON A FRIDAY.

I went to bed last night with visions of sailing ship seeking entrance to the almost hidden rivers of the New South Wales North Coast. I know there are broad, safe and welcoming entryways to places and people and things but the deceptive, the narrow and the mysterious have me entranced.  Into a heart or a mind. Into a river that lads to unexplored valleys.  Into deep caves below ancient mountains. Into secrets that have been locked away from me.

Its Friday here and sunny. It’s the weekend of the BELLINGEN JAZZ AND MANOUCHE FESTIVAL. They say it will rain but it doesn’t look like it will. There will be music all over the town. Free admission to most of it too. Our festivals have been out of control for a while  as regards entry fees. Rubber bands sealed around the wrist to signify permission to enter.

As for me, I shall only touch the fringes of it. Do the markets tomorrow. Buy a gift for my niece for this first birthday without her Mother. And today – a random surf around the Net to wrap up the ENTRANCES, a washing of the hair and a wade in the lagoon at Hungry Head where the ti-tree creek flows into the Pacific Ocean.  I am taking one man with rash on legs and one Cheery redhead with splinter in foot. See what sun, salt and sand do for them combined with doses of ti-tree.

Every man alone is sincere.  At the entrance of a second person, hypocrisy begins.  We parry and fend the approach of our fellow-man by compliments, by gossip, by amusements, by affairs.  We cover up our thought from him under a hundred folds.

Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Friendship,” Essays, 1841

OBSCURE GOOGLED SITES ABOUT ENTRANCES TO HELP ME SLEEP.

Such an appeal could not be disregarded, and in spite of his advanced years
Beowulf donned his armor once more. Accompanied by Wiglaf and eleven of his
bravest men, he then went out to seek the monster in its lair. At the
entrance of the mountain gorge Beowulf bade his followers pause, and
advancing alone to the monster's den, he boldly challenged it to come forth
and begin the fray. A moment later the mountain shook as the monster rushed
out breathing fire and flame, and Beowulf felt the first gust of its hot
breath, even through his massive shield.

                            "First from his lair
Shaking firm earth, and vomiting as he strode
A foul and fiery blast, the monster came."
                                 Beowulf (Conybeare's tr.).

The youth said: 'I will do nothing of that. If thou open the gate, all is well. If thou open it
not, I will bring dishonour upon thy lord and ill report upon thee. And I will raise three
shouts at the entrance of this gate, so that it shall not be less audible on the top of
Pengwaedd in Cornwall and in the depths of Dinsel in the North and in Esgeir Oerfel in
Ireland. And every woman with child that is in this court shall miscarry, and such of them
as are not with child in their wombs shall turn to a burden within them, so that they may
never bear child from this day forth.
