moving near to someone or something and then stopping

THE CAT AND DOGS CAME RIGHT UP TO THE DOOR WAITING FOR THE HUMANS TO GET UP.

I shall squeeze in two of the definitions of the word UP today. Second one is :

along a river, road etc

  • moving along a road, street, path etc, or at a point along it in a direction away from you
  • moving along a river in the opposite direction that the water is flowing, or at a point along it in this direction

THE YAAN.

This would have been a good opportunity to  post a pic of the River along South Arm Road. I was thinking of stopping on my way UP today and taking a shot of the River I love. Then I decided to keep it for myself and kept on drive UP along South Arm Road. Thought the same thing again when I was coming back down in the afternoon. It’s a funny old river. Deep and green and ancient. I live down at the Mouth and my girl lives up near the source.

This month we have had dolphins and one seal swim up river. The dolphins are a delight but they are also naturals for here. The seal, on the other hand, is very unusual. Noone knows what it’s doing this far North and up our river but there it is.

Just occurred to me that UP suggests effort and difficulty and sometimes endurance. It also suggests something special when you get UP there. Its just not so easy to get UP there in the first place. Then again – rethinking that one – I guess it  suggests the effort and difficulty but its not always something good up there. Just take a look at AFRICAN QUEEN and a listen to TOM WAITS. The bit when they are UP THE CREEK used to traumatise me as kid.
