OCTOBER 31 2011 : HIDDEN THINGS

THE YAAN: THE HIDDEN LIFE OF THE BELLINGER RIVER.

For today, I have chosen this image for the HIDDEN photo challenge. Its Halloween and the end of the Month and on my mind are all the small hidden things of life but yesterday we were at the BELLINGEN RIVER FESTIVAL where we were not only celebrating life on the River but also searching through and for the Hidden Things of the Bellinger. The Hidden past. The personal adventures and stories. I like rivers. I think they are mysterious. We know there are bull routs and eels down there under the water and old bottles and bits and pieces from ships and shops long gone. The water supply is somehow filtered through the pebbles as the bottom so they tell me. I don’t get that one as yet but one day I will read up on it. I know the last pirate executed in  Australia was captured down at Fernmount by an undercover  policeman in the 1800s and that my children’s ancestors built at least one of the big bridges. The pirate had a black silk bandana, a gold earring and other odds and ends hidden in his bag. I didn’t think pirates actually did that.

We have a subtropical island in the middle of the river as well. BAT ISLAND it is called. It used to have those big tropical stinging plants that look innocent but I don’t know whether it still has them. I haven’t been there for a bit.   There is something about Rivers. I shall do some looking up of my favourite River sites and quotes. Best do some googling on other HIDDEN blog entries as well and a few thoughts about the hubbling bubbling hidden things that this month has shown me glimpses of.

THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING THAT IS HIDDEN.

THE YAAN.

I don’t seem to have spent much time sitting on Benches and Yaaning over the last few months. I did get a small chance today to sit on a hay bale and Yaan for a bit with Pearl. Pearl put together the RIVER STORIES for today’s festival and the hay bale was in a huge khaki tent right beside the chai stall.

And I sat a while on a bench built for children under the age of 5. That was in the DAWNSONG tent. Dawnsong is a Steiner pre school in North Bellingen.

Now that its night time and I am home and sitting in my very own club chair thinking back over the day, I am smiling my own hidden smile for my own Community. There are other festivals here. Some are OK and some are jaded and highly priced and exclusive of the Town. Today – well today was as good as the old AZALEA Festival.

Give me a moment to consider what happened for me today.

I have been watching this young team of TRANSITION BELLINGEN put this together for months. Pearl has been down and talked with me about my memories of the River , bringing with her a home baked cake. The BELLINGEN RIVER FESTIVAL Facebook Page has stayed active and keen.  I have watched them put the Music together, including young local bands like FIVE DOLLAR BILLIE and thought to myself – “ they just might achieve something special here “ and they have.

We made lanterns and painted pictures. The Gumbaynggirr People were teaching the rest of us things that we don’t know. We had novelty races and the inflatable giraffe collapsed on all the kids who screamed a lot. We ate ice cream and swam in the River which was clean cold and fresh. Two Grandmothers stripped to their underwear and jumped in to the Water to make sure their grandchildren didn’t drown.  There were canoe races and eel fishing competitions.

I might not be sitting on a bench Yaaning right now – but there are many fine little tales I could tell you about this day in a small town.  This week’s Photo Challenge is “HIDDEN”. There is an awful lot hidden in the community of a small town and an awful lot of it is very good indeed.

27 OCTOBER 2011 : STAYING PAST THE BOREDOM

086 056

STAY PAST THE BOREDOM.

That’s what my brother told me years ago when I asked how he created the artworks he was making at that time.

YOU HAVE TO STAY PAST THE BOREDOM.

THE YAAN

We are again having grey, misty, moisty days. Way into Spring. My familiar restless boredom is again upon me. I just bleached the towels  and slept for hours in the afternoon. Boredom is upon me with the thin membrane lying between me and the next breakthrough. My life this year really fits the Terry Pratchett concept :

I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE DIFFERENT.

Nonetheless, I am staying PAST THE BOREDOM. In all areas for the moment. Because I am in doubt. Therefore I do NOTHING. Just wait a little longer. It would be nice if it were a case of not leaving 5 minutes before the miracle.Might be. Might not.  I am just staying past the boredom.

Wonder what its been like at this time of the year, in other years.

2005. Up on the Tweed River at Bilambil. I don’t recall being as bored as I am now. Mind you, I don’t think I am actually bored. I think I am grieving and coming to terms with areas of my life which are NOT working for me. The boredom is in not making the breakthrough in my thinking and emotions which would enable me to ACT. The Charade was still shining in 2005 and in the care of Murwillumbah Michael who maintained her, loved her and put Sai Baba stickers on her to keep her safe. Doug mowed the lawns and of a night I had a necklace of lights on the opposite hill where Bilambil Heights was. I had morning meetings most days and grandchildren over in Kingscliff and I lived alone and answered to no man.

2006. I was in Sydney for some of the October. I can’t recall why. I was visiting my daughter. That I do know.  We took the JetCat across the Harbour to Manly.   I like being on the water. I was hoping to go out on the River here but the Water Rat washed out to sea in the 2009 floods. Sometimes, sometimes – there’s not so much to do.

2007. I was living between Brisbane  and Bilambil. I knew next to nothing of Brisbane so I wasn’t bored there. I was EXPLORING.

2008: Well – maybe I haven’t been bored as long or as often as I think. 2008,I used to lunch at ILNAM ESTATE WINERY up in CAROOL on the TWEED. It is truly a beautiful place.

2009: Living in Ulmarra and not at all bored. My sister and I were reconciled. I turned 60. My daughter was pregnant for the first time. My Mob visited often. Good times indeed.

2010 : Torpor. Maybe its TORPOR. Maybe I am chocolate boxed out for the moment. The JACARANDA blooms – AGAIN. There is the Essential Alcoholic.  The sun is shining – AGAIN. The river is flowing – STILL FLOWING. October is here and the damned jacaranda is blooming – AGAIN.

2011 – I do not even have a photograph. One long dreary day.
