ON THE BENCHES

THE YAAN : There was a time in Australia where we didn’t shoot kids. I think there was such a time. I think there was a time when a police officer would have been distressed if her or she had shot a a kid. Even more distressed if he or she had then dragged the kid from the car they were in and pounded his head into a pool of blood from the bullet wounds. I think there was a time when Police knew how to stop a car on a footpath without shooting point blank through the windscreen into the heads and neck of two unarmed juveniles, regardless of whether or not they were up to something dodgy. I think there was a time when the public would have been very upset as well. I think there was such a time.  The time seems to have passed.

I knew a good man in Urunga once. He was the local policeman. He pursued a “bad man” and most of the town helped him out. I don’t recall a gun being thought necessary.

I knew another good man. He was the Urunga local policeman of a different era. He delivered a batch of rascally rogue lads home one night. Prevented trouble before it began. He didn’t seem to need to pull a gun either.

I don’t think that there is EVER a time when shooting a young person is something other than tragic – no matter what that young person is like. No matter what they have been doing.
