THE YAAN : The black cat known as Spider came bounding across the other morning and deposited this on the front verandah. Rats have been chewing the wires inside the walls of the Cottage. The Electrician, young Jayden Carter, did some whirligigging  and the power is working OK for the moment. The ratlike creatures gnaw on things inside the walls during the night. Back in 1970, there was a mouse plague in Tumbarumba and other towns. Our beds were stood in cans of water to stop the mice climbing up while we slept. One of the young teachers was tapping them over the head and making a bag from their skins. Another of the young teachers had a possum skin blanket for her bed. Nothing to do with the Mice. It was to do with the extreme cold down there in Tumbraumba. It would not be considered  a politically correct or humane thing to have nowadays but times were different then.

At Fernmount, up here in the Bellingen Shire, in 1981 , the mice came up from the potato paddocks. Mice or rats. They chewed through the baby’s mattress. They bred in the washing machine. They ate many things they weren’t meant to eat.

Further north on the Tweed River, they came out of the sugar cane fields when the fires burned.

A pet rat bit a young girl on the toe once in her kitchen  in Sydney. The local hospital didn’t know whether or not she needed a rabies shot. They didn’t give her one and she didn’t get rabies.
